How to Have a Successful First Trip with Your Partner

Taking a trip with your significant for the first time is a pretty big deal. You generally don't spend every minute of every hour with your SO. According to Gwendolyn Seidman, an associate professor at Albright College and a contributor to Psychology Today, there are many ways that going on trips with your partner can affect your relationship. Traveling with your partner increases opportunities for conflict due to the increase of interdependence, but it also can magnify tensions that already exist. Also, certain types of travel may be exhausting, as going from city to city creates stress and more opportunities to lash out at your partner. Nonetheless, a vacation with your partner can also lead to amazing moments, and memories you can share for a long time. So, follow this advice from Pyar.com to have the best experience you possibly can!

Wait a little before going on a major trip

According to relationship coach Sameera Sullivan, you should take some time with your partner, roughly six months at least before going on a major trip. A good reason for this is simply making sure you are serious about the relationship. Obviously, you don't have to marry this person, but at least knowing you like this person enough is a good start.

Take some moments for yourself

You are going to be with your partner for almost 100% of this trip, so why not make that 100% more like 85%? Take maybe half a day and experience something on your own and allow your partner that as well. Then you can reconvene later and talk about your day together. This gives you an opportunity for some R&R, and then some quality conversation with your significant other at the end of the day.

Plan together beforehand

One way to avoid disagreements during the trip is to have a comprehensive plan of what you will spend money on, how you'll get to where you'll go, and who is responsible for what. This will give you both clear preparation and you won't have to worry about getting into extreme disagreements with each other.

Take shorter trips first

Before taking that longer 1-2 week vacation try taking short weekend trips. Perhaps you can visit a beach town for a couple of days and spend time on the beach. This is a great way to introduce a trip before traveling cross country or internationally.

Find out if there is a spa near you

A good way to keep yourself and your partner relaxed is to take time in the vacation for a relaxing spa trip, especially if you are traveling a lot through a country you are unfamiliar with. Walking through cities all day can be really tiring and tensions might flair so taking a day to relax your muscles and give you a break from the frantic pace of city travel.

Give yourself space after coming back

If you both live separately, it will be important to do some things separately for at least a couple of days. Hang out with your regular friends, and just live your life normally before coming back together and continuing your normal routine.

At the end of the day, traveling with your partner can be both really amazing and also really stressful. Having a plan and taking time for yourself during and after the trip can really save a relationship. Good luck and enjoy your travels!
