Step-by-Step Guide on Dating Yourself

When you're dating someone, you treat them well and make time for them regularly. That's a great way to treat your partner, but why aren't you showing yourself the same courtesy? Whether you're single or in a relationship, self care should be a top priority. Here's a step-by-step guide on dating yourself.

Step-by-step guide on dating yourself

Getting to know yourself better will only make future romances that much better. You'll know how to pick a partner based on what you know about yourself.

1. Get to know yourself

Dating requires personal insight into your values, your strengths, your weaknesses, and how you interact with loved ones. Dating yourself provides you opportunities to develop your hobbies, interests and passions which are important bedrocks for a fulfilling life.

In order to get to know yourself, spend some quality time alone. Set time aside during the week or on a weekend to enjoy your own company. Instead of hanging out with friends and family, go solitary and figure out what your likes and dislikes are. It's easy to get caught up in other people's fun.

2. Have fun by yourself

It's always good to spend some time for yourself doing something fun. In doing this, you will learn to enjoy your own company, and most likely, feel more confident doing things on your own.

This could mean:

  • Going for a long drive
  • Watching a movie
  • Relaxing at the beach
  • Hiking a trail
  • Taking yourself out for a nice meal

Don't care about what other people think when they see you sitting or walking alone. They're probably jealous that you are brave enough to do it!

3. Treat yo'self

This one probably seems obvious, but taking care of yourself plays a big part in learning how to date yourself. A lot of people do not practice self care, because it makes them feel selfish. If you take care of yourself, you will be the best version of yourself in your next relationship.

Easy self care ideas:

  • Get a full night of rest
  • Eat healthy food
  • Drink lots of water
  • Feed your spirit
  • Exercise in the sun

You can also surprise yourself with some mood enhancement self care. Send yourself a beautiful bouquet of flowers at work. If chocolates make you feel extra special, buy yourself a box. You deserve it. Treat yo'self! If you don't have anyone in your life that will surprise you, it's your job is to make yourself feel important. Don't leave your happiness up to others.

4. Start a journal

Write out your thoughts and feelings in a journal. Not only will it feel cathartic to get it down on paper, keeping notes allows you to later see how you coped with certain situations. This is also a positive way for you to get rid of any negative experiences and feelings, helping you to focus on the good things and learn from the bad.

5. Make a vision board

Visualizing your dreams and goals is a good way to feel motivated and excited about your future. You can focus on your passions and dreams and start to love your life and yourself. Use the journal mentioned in the step above, a poster board or even a cork board. Cut out motivational images from magazines, print out inspirational quotes and collect photos of places you want to go and things you want to accomplish.

6. Cook for yourself

You would make dinner for your partner, wouldn't you? Going out to dinner every night can get very expensive, even if you're dating yourself. So instead of visiting your favorite restaurant, cook yourself the meal you would order at home. Not only will you be treating yourself to some delicious food, you'll be working on your skills in the kitchen.

7. Respect yourself

For any relationship to work, there should be a mutual level of respect. It is important that you appreciate yourself, so other people follow suit. Speak kindly about yourself and don't let other people talk negatively about you. If you can't love yourself, how can you love another?

8. Dress up for no reason

If you're someone who likes to get dressed up before a date, then get dolled up before a date with yourself. Dressing up makes you feel good. So put on those brand new heels or that sharp new bomber jacket before heading out the door, you'll thank yourself! Psychologically, you'll feel your best which will make you exude confidence.

9. Give yourself a break when you need it

Sometimes, you just need a break from the chaos of life. Allow yourself to retreat when you feel burned out. Recharge your social battery, refuel your desire to start fresh and give yourself that night in -- ALONE.
