Top 6 Reasons to Stay Single in College

In college, there is a lot of external pressure to be in a romantic relationship. Sometimes this pressure comes from family; sometimes from friends. However, there are compelling reasons to stay single! It's worth thinking about those before rushing into a relationship. Consider the following reasons to stay single in college.

Best Reasons for Being Single in College

1. You can focus on your career

College is not just about getting an education -- it's about getting an education that will lead to a career. Having a boyfriend/girlfriend in college sounds great in theory, but in reality, it can end up distracting you from what's really important. Focus on reading books instead of reading text messages.

2. You can enjoy with your friends

Sometimes, people lose their friends, because they would rather hang out with their boyfriend or girlfriend. But your friends can get jealous, too... especially when you don't hang out with them anymore. Don't forget your plans just because you're spending all of your time to your boyfriend/girlfriend. Utilize your time wisely. You can find a partner later. The friends you make know might even help.

3. Being single provides freedom

Relationships take two to tango. You both have to sacrifice for your relationship to work. When you're single, however, you don't need to change yourself. There will be no compromises. You can spend your money as you like, live how you wish, plan solely according to what you want. You can wear anything, go anywhere, do everything and hang out with whomever you want. You don't have to ask permission. Explore, discover yourself and be happy. Being single means having no worries!

Most college-aged singles are not experienced in relationships and have unrealistic expectations resulting in both parties being unhappy. Your girlfriend might get upset if you talk to other girls, even if you were friends before you started dating. She might feel possessive and put pressure on you to commit to things that you can't -- like promising that you'll stay together after graduation. Many people who date in college end up feeling tied down, because their significant other has different ideas about how their relationship should be. Staying single allows you to figure out what you need from a relationship before jumping into one.

4. You learn to love yourself more

College is where people start to find themselves and pick a path for their futures. Go out, have fun, party hard. Get to know more about yourself. People in relationships tend to spend so much time with their partners, they forget to keep time for themselves. But self care goes a long way! Take some time out of the day for you. Finding happiness in yourself leads to finding happiness with someone else.

5. You won't get your heart broken

Breakups or broken hearts are hard to heal. It's like all the butterflies in your stomach died. You'll feel empty, and you'll feel like giving up. But if you're single, you won't ever shed a single tear for a useless guy or girl. Breakups and fights won’t be a problem -- waking up for Monday classes is the only fighting you'll have to deal with. You don't have to stress about being single, but you will have to stress about your exams!

6. You can flirt with anyone

Having a boyfriend/girlfriend means having a limited number of friends of the opposite gender. No girlfriend wants her boyfriend to flirting with another girl. No boyfriend wants to see his girlfriend laughing and joking with another guy. If you're single, you can meet more people and form more friendships.

College is a place to mold yourself. Go to class, take care of yourself and make crazy memories. You can't love someone else until you first love yourself. Spend these formative years getting to know yourself, so you can have deep, authentic relationships in the future.
